Abstract:
Plan to attend the "Back by Popular Demand" Bariatric Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Simulation Challenge (BSPHMSC) to learn from colleagues and further enhance your knowledge base in the BSPHM field. The BSPHMSC is an innovative employee engagement and knowledge-building activity specifically developed for BSPHM program promotion. Teams of participants collaborate to carry out various patient handling tasks designed to provoke critical thinking. Each participant will be part of a 4-6-member team. You can join as a team or sign up as an individual and you will be assigned to a team The BSPHMSC will consist of case study discussions and clinical case scenarios with a hands-on demonstration of various mobility tasks with simulated plus-size patients; as such, understanding and competency in using BSPHM practices are fundamental. Each team must develop BSPHM evidence-based strategies to accomplish various mobility tasks using appropriate safe patient handling practices. Two evaluators with safe patient handling expertise will assess elements within each mobility task/clinical scenario. After each task, a debriefing session will be held with the evaluators to discuss criteria of assessment and performance of the team related to demonstrated strengths and areas for improvement. In addition, the debriefing will also include comments from the simulated patient. The simulated patient offers additional input to enhance overall team understanding of BSPHM practices from the patient's perspective in real time. Lunch is not included.

Objectives:
• Embrace collaborative learning for effective bariatric patient handling activities.
• Master various mobility tasks through hands-on simulations with plus-size patients.
• Develop evidence-based strategies to ensure safe and efficient mobility practices.

Bariatric Solutions Series: The Post-Acute Experience - Interactice Case-Based Panel Discussion (3004)
Presented by: Susan Gallagher PhD RN CBN CSPHP, Darrin Trees DPT, Brain Hokamp MHA MBA NREMT-P and Eric Ansart MS

Abstract:
The economic and humanistic costs of delays in acute care discharge can be overwhelming. Healthcare facilities across the country find that patient discharge from acute care to long-term care facilities can be significantly delayed, which is emotionally discouraging for patients and costly for acute care facilities by way of extended length of stay, additional exposure to worker injury, and more. Long-term care settings (nursing homes) often report an inadequacy in providing size-appropriate care to plus-size residents and are therefore reluctant to accept plus-sized residents.
